Terpene ratios: the formula behind the calculator

A terpene ratio is the percentage of terpenes in the finished blend, not a percentage added on top of your base. At 5% in a 30 ml batch, terpenes account for 5% of the final 30 ml and the base makes up the remaining 95%. The calculator above works the same way: the diluent and terpene percentages you enter are shares of the final mixture. For the underlying chemistry, the IUPAC definition of terpenes is a reliable primary reference.

Where you only need the arithmetic, the calculation is:

Terpene amount (ml) = total batch size (ml) × target percentage ÷ 100

Per 1 ml reference for micro-batches

  • 2% = 0.02 ml (20 µl) per 1 ml
  • 5% = 0.05 ml (50 µl) per 1 ml
  • 7% = 0.07 ml (70 µl) per 1 ml
  • 10% = 0.10 ml (100 µl) per 1 ml

Choosing a target percentage

  • 2% — a subtle lift, with a lighter aroma and flavour presence.
  • 5% — balanced and noticeable without feeling heavy.
  • 7% — stronger, with a more forward profile.
  • 10% — bold intensity, best used carefully and with a clear target in mind.

If you are unsure, start lower, record the result, then adjust in small steps.

Working from grams: density and conversion

The calculator starts from your extract weight in grams and converts to volume using density, which is why it provides a separate terpene density and diluent density field. Both default to 0.833 g/ml. Where the Certificate of Analysis for the profile you are using states a different figure, select Custom and enter it — the density value is what makes the gram-to-millilitre conversion accurate.

Three mistakes that shift a ratio without you noticing

  • Measuring the base first, then adding terpenes on top. This raises the final volume, so the true percentage ends up lower than intended. Decide the final volume first, then calculate.
  • Eyeballing small amounts in 10 ml batches. At low volumes a fraction of a millilitre moves the percentage noticeably.
  • Switching between “% of base” and “% of final total volume”. Stay with the percentage of the final total — that is what this calculator uses throughout.
